A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
