We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
