The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
