Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
