Tropical Storm the storm is predicted to become a rare Category 5 cyclone as it veers towards Jamaica, bringing deadly sudden floods and mudslides.

The hurricane, which had wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to reach land by early next week, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Warnings of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been issued as the hurricane produces up to 30 inches of rainfall and sea level surges as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th named hurricane in this year's Atlantic season, which typically ends in November.

Category Five Cyclone Danger

A highest-level hurricane is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

Even though this storm is expected to reduce in intensity to a category four hurricane before making landfall on the island, experts said there was "almost no noticeable change in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the country.

Urgent Safety Steps

With storm-force winds and rain already expected ahead of it moves across the island's interior - possibly even the national capital - advisories indicate that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"An extended timeframe of damaging winds and intense precipitation have begun and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and multiple landslides," advised meteorological officials.

The country's head of government the official commented: "I know that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: concern is justified.

"However the best way to manage anxiety and any nervousness and worry is to stay ready."

Locals are being told to secure their homes with sandbags and timber panels, and to gather basic necessities.

Wider Effects

Warnings are also ongoing for areas in the neighboring country such as the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is projected to bring similar effects by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides currently triggered by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Projected Trajectory

Melissa is predicted to cross Cuba by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and entering the Atlantic.

By the moment it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have reduced to a category three storm.

Weather Connection

Although it is hard to link individual weather events to climate change, scientists say it is resulting in weather phenomena more prevalent and more intense.

Higher ocean heat produce greater water vapor in the air, contributing to the creation of hurricanes.

Prior to the beginning of the current Caribbean cyclone season, weather organizations predicted increased storm frequency, mentioning warmer seas and potential stronger monsoon activity around the western African continent - where tropical systems frequently develop.
