A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
